I will take whatever time is
needed, for a photo session. You will never be rushed.
I keep a relaxed atmosphere, and NEVER tell anyone to "Say Cheese"
For kids, I tell them I have two rules "have fun and don't break anything"...otherwise, they can ham it up and have a good time.
I encourage you to let your kids pick out some things, to bring to the session, that are meaningful to them. I don't use fakey kinds of props (well, almost never). I believe that when kids bring thier own stuff, to a session, they are more comfortable, not to mention that the photos will be more personalized, and will be enjoyed and treasured for generations, to come.
Feel free to bring different outfits. We may use some or all of what you bring, but it's good to have a variety.
For groups, outfits can be matching, or at least closely matching. Light solid color shirts tend to work well. White or light blue are preferred, but any pastel can work. I would avoid stripes and bold patterns, unless it is for a certain effect.
